PURIFAN TROUBLE SHOOTING
Welcome to the Purifan trouble shooting guide. Scroll down for the answers to the most common questions...

Installation Problems and Solutions

P: My Purifan will not fit over the light kit (or light fixture). How can I resolve this?

S: If you have removed the bulbs and the globes and the Purifan still will not fit over the light kit, you will have to remove the light kit from your ceiling fan motor before continuing with the installation of the Purifan. Refer to your ceiling fan/light kit installation manual for instructions.

P: The motor control/light kit switch housing is too large in diameter to allow access to the paddle blade bracket mounting screws.

S: Some ceiling fan designs allow for easy removal of the switch housing. You should follow your ceiling fan installation instructions for switch housing removal or replace your ceiling fan motor with a Purifan motor. you can order a matching Purifan motor online or by calling toll free, 800-686-6131.

P: The last one (or two) Purifan bracket(s) is too long to fit from the ceiling fan bracket mounting hole(s) to the Purifan mounting hole(s).

S: Verify that all of the brackets are installed in the correct holes. See Owner's Manual pages 4 & 5. If the brackets are all installed correctly, you can generally correct this problem by changing the angle of the brackets. To do this, loosen all of the bracket screws and grasp the Purifan. While holdng it steady rotate the ceiling fan motor slightly until the mounting holes line up.

P: The last one (or two) Purifan bracket(s) is too short to fit from the ceiling fan bracket mounting hole(s) to the Purifan mounting hole(s).

S: Verify that all of the brackets are installed in the correct holes. See Owner's Manual pages 4 & 5. If the brackets are all installed correctly, it is possible the ceiling fan motor is too small to operate a Purifan. You can check your ceiling fan's compatibility to the Purifan or you can order a Purifan motor online on this website or by calling toll free 800-686-6131.

P: I removed all of the paddle blades, but now I don't know which bracket mounting holes to use. What should I do?

S: General a four blade ceiling fan will use eight mounting holes and a five blade ceiling fan will use ten mounting holes. Some manufacturers drill more holes than are needed so they can use the same motor for several ceiling fan styles. To install the Purifan you will only need to install four brackets for a four blade ceiling fan and five brackets for a five blade ceiling fan. To do this you simply need to locate the 4 or 5 holes (depending on the number of blades on your ceiling fan) equally spaced around the outside edge of the motor

P: The Purifan is installed, but now the motor won't turn?

S: First you need to try and turn the Purifan by hand. Does it turn freely? If it doesn't, this typically means that you have placed the unused paddle blade mounting screws back into the motor. Sometimes they are too long when not used with the brackets and they will bind up the motor. Remove them, if this is the case. If it does turn freely, then is is more likely that you have an electrical problem. There are several quick checks. First, check the forward/reverse slide switch on the sideo f the motor. See Owner's Manual page 2. Make sure the switch is moved all the way one direction. Second, check your wall fan switch, switch it on and off. Third, check that you have not turned off the electricity at the breaker. Fourth, remove the Purifan and the brackets from your ceiling fan motor. Does it spin now? If not, you will need to contact a qualified electrician.

P: Which direction should the Purifan turn?

S:  In the direction of the arrow on the side of the Purifan, or from right to left (counter-clockwise).  See Owner's Manual page 5.

P: Will the Purifan work turning in the opposite direction?

S:  Yes, but for maximum efficiency the Purifan should turn counter-clockwise.

P: Which way are the filters installed?

S:  The white side of the filter faces inside toward the center of the Purifan.  The black faces tot he outside against the filter retaining door.  See Owner's Manual page 5 & 7

P: One (or more) of the filter doors does not stay down. What should I do?

S:  This is often caused by a door not being properly seated.  To correct this, turn off the Purifan.  Place your fingers at the bottom of the door slots, thumbs on the bottom of the Purifan.  Move the door slightly in and out while applying slight pressure between fingers and thumbs until the door clicks into place.  See Owner's Manual pages 5 & 7

P: I clicked the doors into place, but one (or more) of the doors will not stay down?

S:  You will need to replace the Purifan.  Please call toll free, 800-686-6131 for the Return Authorization and return shipping information.

P: The paddle blade mounting bracket screw head is too large to fit the Purifan bracket.

S:  The easiest way to address this problem is to take a Purifan bracket and one of your old paddle blade mounting bracket screws to your local hardware store.  They will be able to locate a screw that will fit and solve this problem.

P: I followed the installation instructions and the leveling procedures, but the Purifan still wobbles a lot.

S: The Purifan has been designed and tested to be almost perfectly balanced. However, there are several things that can be checked to try and resolve this type of problem.

First, check your electrical mounting box. Is it secure or does it move? If it moves you will need to address this before continuing.

Second, is the ceiling fan mounting bracket tight against the electrical box? Are the set screws on the down rod secure? You may have to refer to your ceiling fan owner's manual for information on how to tighten these screws.

Third, have you ensured that the Purifan is installed properly? There are several things that can be checked. Check the Purifan mounting brackets to make sure they have been installed correctly and they are in the correct holes for your ceiling fan. See Owner's Manual pages 6 & 7. Have you run the fan on high with the screws slightly loose? If not, try this and then aallow the Purifan to coast to a stop and retighten the screws. Have you followed all of the leveling steps in the Owner's Manual? See Owner's Manual pages 6 & 7. If you try all of these steps and you still experience the wobble the problem is likely the ceiling fan motor. However, we will exchange the Purifan. If the problem remains with the replacement Purifan, you should replace the ceiling fan motor with a Purifan motor, Order Online, Find Your Local Dealer or by call in to order toll free, 800-686-6131.

P: The Purifan is installed and running fine, but the ceiling fan motor makes noise.

S: It is likely bearing noise, but you should check to make sure none of the screws that secure the Purifan brackets tot he motors have gone in too far. If everything checks out you should replace the ceiling fan motor with a Purifan motor, available at online on this web site or by calling toll free, 800-686-6131.  Local Purifan dealers will also have Purifan motors in stock.  There are also motors available at Lowe's called the Harbor Breeze Builder's Best 52-inch model in a variety of colors that match the Purifans.  Pewter is called AN Antique Nickel, and Bronze is called BZ Aged Bronze.  The correct item number at Lowes will be _______ Ivory, _______ Antique Brass, _________ Black, ________  Antique Nickel (Pewter) and ________ Aged Bronze.
