Purifan’s Grant Application Assistance Program

Reducing Illness in the Classroom to Improve Learning

Purifan strongly believes every elementary school classroom would see substantial improvements in student academic performance if they filtered the classroom air more than 20 times per hour. This is based on information published by the EPA in reports and actual classroom experiences with air purifiers installed. EPA studies showed that classrooms often have up to 10 times the levels of airborne particulates as the air outside the school building. It is well-known that schools have limited funds in their tight budgets, which restricts spending on adding air purifiers in their classrooms and maintaining them with filter changes. To reduce this financial burden on schools, Purifan started our Grant Application Assistance Program to get outside funding needed for a 5 to 10 year trial, paying for the purchase, installation, and filter changes needed two times per year for Purifan Air Purifiers.

Elementary school classrooms equipped with Purifan Air Purifiers reported a 70% reduction in absenteeism, resulting in fewer sick days, and a substantial improvement in state standardized test scores. This is because removing airborne particles and reducing the spread of seasonal, contagious illnesses helps children get sick less often from allergies, asthma, or seasonal colds or flu. Children take up to 70% fewer sick days and feel better in the classroom, so they can keep up with the material they are supposed to be learning. Many children were able to stop taking daily allergy drugs that make them sleepy in class and impact their learning and memory. Clean classroom air also reduced the children’s need to visit the school nurse’s office to use their rescue inhalers. For many families, the cost of inhalers for their children dropped significantly. Some families reported they never had to buy another inhaler after Purifans arrived in their classroom.

In each state, Purifan will be seeking a 5 year trial in 5,000 classrooms in the state, funded and paid for by Medicaid. Then, Medicaid would monitor the reduction in health costs for those Medicaid insured students in those classrooms to prove that the amount of savings exceeds the costs of installing and maintaining Purifans in those classrooms. The study would also analyze the students’ test score performance improvements compared to those in non-equipped classrooms during the same time periods.

About Purifan Air Purifiers

Purifan air purifiers are unique in our industry. Purifans mount directly to the motor of a regular ceiling fan and are silent not to disrupt the classroom or learning environment. They are quick and simple to install and use about the same amount of energy as a 60 watt lightbulb, making them a cost effective choice for schools working within a budget.

The Purifan design allows air to be continually cleaned and moved efficiently throughout a space. In fact, the Purifan can completely clean the air in a 20 x 20 foot room every 90 seconds. One Purifan is efficient in cleaning a 20 x 20 foot (400 sq. ft) space or smaller. As the size of the room or space increases, additional Purifans can be installed to maintain the same air purifying capabilities.

Purifans capture particulates and odors using EPA-recommended filtering media technology, using our 5-stage filtering system including recycled paper, HEPA-level particulate filters, and activated charcoal. Purifans work to eliminate mold, bacteria, allergens, and dust from the classroom, improving health and reducing the number of absentee students and faculty due to sickness. This also improves the learning environment by creating cleaner air and surfaces that do not spread bacteria.
